The Diabetic Patient

30,300,000 people have diabetes. 1 of 4 people don’t know they have diabetes. 84,100,000 people are pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetics include 23,100,000 adults aged 65 or older. 1 of 3 people are pre-diabetic and don’t know it.

This population cannot afford to ignore their feet. Diabetes can cause nerve damage called Neuropathy. With decreased sensation we see ulcers or changes in the shape of the foot, including the devastating Charcot foot. These conditions can lead to amputation if not monitored and controlled.

Diabetes also directly and indirectly affects blood flow to the feet which is a leading cause of limb amputation.

Diabetic patients do not need to lose a limb because they have diabetes. But they do need support and guidance to help prevention.
